Embodiment
There are a lot of habitual tasks that we do in the course of a day (from brushing our teeth to driving to work) without being really aware of it. Once the body can perform the task without your involvement, you have embodied that task. You are then on autopilot and that part of your life becomes a routine or a habit. Those everyday gestures ultimately show in your physical structure. It is not really surprising, but your body and brain take shape in response to your life experiences and what you do every day. In other words: over time, your body becomes a reflection of the person who lives within it.
Most of the routine doing and being that get hard-wired into your brain and body will outlive its usefulness at one point of time. Especially as you face new situations, enter a new phase in your life, or are confronted with something which takes you out of your routines. On the one hand you have outgrown yourself, on the other hand you are still on autopilot. That is the feeling of being stuck: you have embodied your current life but are ready for another.
If you want to change your life you need to change your body as well. But you can’t access your body by thinking about it. And you can’t change your life by only thinking about it. In other words, you can’t live your life by thought alone. Thinking impairs your ability to feel yourself. In fact, the more you think, the less you tend to feel. You have to slow down, go inside of yourself, and experience all aspects of, well, your Self. Along the way you’ll come across life experiences that show up as unresolved emotions, contractions, pain, compromised posture, shallow breathing, etc. Our live is literally contained in the cells of our body. Unfortunately most people prefer to carry on living their current lives rather than facing themselves.
The most difficult thing about personal transformation is not the learning of new ways of being. It is the un-learning of old ways of being, both in your mind and in your body, which is so difficult. Transformation is only possible when you embody the change you seek. Your body is talking to you all the time. The question is: are you listening?
“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”
